Dybala's Bench Role At Roma Not Influenced By Transfer Gossip, Says De Rossi

Roma coach Daniele De Rossi insists Paulo Dybala's recent bench role was purely tactical amidst ongoing transfer rumours. Dybala, linked with a move away, played the last 15 minutes against Everton in a pre-season friendly.

Paulo Dybala's absence from Roma's starting line-up against Everton was not influenced by transfer rumours, according to head coach Daniele De Rossi. The Argentine forward played the last 15 minutes of the 1-1 pre-season friendly at Goodison Park. De Rossi fielded a strong team for Roma's final warm-up match.

De Rossi clarified that his selection decisions were not swayed by speculation about Dybala's future. "The line-up does not depend on rumours," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Nothing influenced my decisions. I deployed the team that I wanted to see against Everton."

Dybala Benching Not Transfer Related

Dybala has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League during the off-season. However, De Rossi emphasised that his choices were based on tactical needs and preparation for the upcoming season. "The start of the season is near, and we must be more similar to what we want to be," he added.

Last season, Dybala scored 16 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions for Roma. Only Romelu Lukaku scored more, with 21 goals in 47 matches. Dybala also led Roma in goal involvements, contributing to 26 goals by scoring and assisting.

In Serie A alone, Dybala was involved in 22 goals, which was only surpassed by Olivier Giroud (23) and Lautaro Martinez (27). He also created the most chances (61) and big chances (15) among Roma players in all competitions during the 2023-24 season.

Future Uncertainties

De Rossi mentioned that all players who travelled to England are considered part of Roma's squad for now. "Those who came to England are all Roma players; then we'll see what happens," he said. This statement applies not just to Dybala but to everyone on the team.

When asked if there were any indispensable players, De Rossi responded negatively. "Whoever wants to leave is free to do so," he stated firmly.

Dybala’s contributions last season underscore his importance to Roma’s attacking play. His ability to create and score goals makes him a valuable asset for the team as they prepare for the new season.

The coach’s comments indicate a focus on team cohesion and readiness rather than individual player situations. This approach aims to ensure that Roma starts the season strongly, regardless of ongoing transfer speculations surrounding key players like Dybala.

The upcoming season will reveal how these decisions impact Roma’s performance and whether Dybala remains a central figure in De Rossi’s plans.
