East Bengal FC's journey in the AFC Champions League 2 ended in heartbreak as they were narrowly defeated 2-3 by Turkmenistan's Altyn Asyr in a thrilling Preliminary Stage match at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on August 14 -- Wednesday.
Despite a promising start, the Kolkata-based club couldn't hold onto their early lead, succumbing to the relentless pressure from the visitors. East Bengal made a dream start, opening the scoring in just the 6th minute through David Lalhlansanga.

A well-placed cross from Nandha Kumar was initially saved by Altyn Asyr's goalkeeper, Babayev, but Lalhlansanga was quick to pounce on the rebound, giving the home side an early advantage.
However, Altyn Asyr quickly regrouped and responded with an equalizer in the 18th minute. Myrat Annayev found the back of the net with a superb finish, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from East Bengal. The Turkmenistan club then took the lead in the 28th minute through Selim Nurmyradov, whose stunning free-kick left East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill with no chance.
The first half ended with Altyn Asyr leading 2-1, leaving East Bengal with all to do in the second half. The Kolkata side struggled to regain control after the break, and their situation worsened in the 52nd minute when Mihail Titov extended Altyn Asyr's lead with a clinical strike.
East Bengal showed resilience and pulled one back in the 59th minute through a moment of brilliance from Saul Crespo. The midfielder's solo run and curling shot from the edge of the box brought the score to 2-3, reigniting hopes of a comeback.
In the final stages of the match, East Bengal threw everything forward in search of an equalizer. Cleiton Silva came close, but his effort was disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper. Despite their best efforts, East Bengal couldn't find the elusive third goal, and the match ended with a narrow victory for Altyn Asyr.
With this defeat, East Bengal's campaign in the AFC Champions League 2 comes to an end. They will now turn their focus to the AFC Challenge League, where they hope to make a strong impact.
