Gupta began his football career in India before moving to Portugal, where he was part of youth and senior teams. He also had a brief spell in Spain before returning to India to sign with FC Goa in 2023. Since joining the club, he has made several appearances in league matches and has been a phenomenon for the Gaurs.

On the international front, Gupta received a call-up to the Indian national team in 2024 and has played in World Cup qualifying matches. His role in the team is primarily as a defender on the left side.

"FC Goa have reached an agreement with East Bengal FC for the transfer of defender Jay Gupta, a club record fee for an Indian player. We'd like to thank Jay for an incredible two years in the orange and blue, a journey that saw us reach back-to-back semi-finals and lift the Kalinga Super Cup," a statement from FC Goa said on Tuesday.

Apart from Jay Gupta, East Bengal have completed a host of signings this season. Bipin Singh has joined the club for free from Mumbai City, while the club also announced the signing of Edmund Lalrindika from Inter Kashi. Martand Raina has joined them from Rajasthan United while Ramsanga has also penned a deal from Real Kashmir.

Two key players from last season, Vishnu PV and Souvik Chakrabarti have signed new deals at the Kolkata club and are set to continue till 2028 and 2027 respectively.

Apart from that, East Bengal have also completed its full quota of foreign players. Although the official announcement is not made yet, the Red and Gold Brigade have signed four overseas players, who are set to arrive in India later this month.
