East Bengal will be taking a long shot at qualifying for the semifinals as they take on Aizawl FC in their final Group B game of the Super Cup at the Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri on Monday. East Bengal were held for back-to-back draws in their first two matches and now have a slim chance of making it to the semis.

The Kolkata giants, who finished ninth in the ISL last month, could have had a completely different Super Cup if their defence was up to the mark. The side squandered the lead in back-to-back games as Odisha held them to a 1-1 draw through Nandhakumar's second-half goal after Mobashir Rahman put them at the front.

The second match, in particular, left a bitter taste in their mouth as they gave away a two-goal lead to Hyderabad FC before the defence's shambolic collapse under pressure for a 3-3 game. It won't be wrong to say that the team also escaped imminent defeat as Hyderabad pushed for a win in the closing minute.

The results mean East Bengal must beat Aizawl FC by a hefty margin and hope that nobody comes out as a winner in the match between Odisha and Hyderabad, who face each other right after the East Bengal match. A 4-0 win will suffice for Bengal if the other game ends in a draw. Any other result will make it difficult for Stephen Constantine and his side to progress.

If East Bengal fail to progress, it will also bring an end to Constantine's sole season of managing the club since Emami took over last year. Former FC Goa coach Sergio Lobera will return to ISL and take charge of East Bengal for the next season.
