East Bengal will begin a new journey under new foreign coach Carles Cuadrat as the Kolkata Giants will face Bangladesh Army in their opening Group A game of the 131st IndianOil Durand Cup at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Sunday (August 6, 2023).
Cuadrat, who had a long stint with Bengaluru FC as an assistant coach and head coach in 2016-21, has named a strong 26-member squad for the oldest Asian football tournament in India. Likes of Naorem Mahesh Singh, Harmanjot Khabra, and VP Suhair among others are the big names from the last season.
Mandar Rao Desai and Nandhakumar Sekar are among the key Indian signings for the new season as East Bengal have spent on 13 players so far in the transfer window ahead of Indian Super League 2023-24 season. Also, among key foreign names are Javier Siviero and Saul Crespo, who were signed earlier this season.
The two brand-new foreign signings are Jose Pardo and Jordan Elsey, who are likely to play the role of two center-backs in the defensive line with Kamaljit Singh defending the goal.
Interestingly, this is not the first time East Bengal are in action this season as their youth squad has been competing in the ongoing Calcutta Football League season and have impressed with their unbeaten run in the first six games. They are currently placed second in Group B behind Bhawanipore, who held East Bengal for a 1-1 draw in their last game.
This was just second draw among four wins in CFL as the likes of Dip Saha, Gurnaj Singh Grewal, Vanlalpeka Guite, Kush Chhetry, Athul Unnikrishnan are among the players who have impressed. Grewal, Unnikrishnan, Jesin TK, Guite, Souvik Chakrabarty among others have also been drafted in the squad due to their performances.
