What a response by Diamond Harbour FC as they kept putting crosses and lobbed balls into the box for the forward. It finally paid off as a long ball into the box was headed poorly clear by an EB defender. The loose ball fell to Supratik Barui, who volleyed the ball the first time, the effort was misdirected and went towards Rahul Paswan, who adjusted his body well to tap the ball in from close range to restore parity! East Bengal's B team is playing for pride in their last three matches of the Calcutta Football League in the Premier Division as they take on fast-emerging Diamond Harbour FC at the East Bengal Ground in Kolkata Maidan on Monday (October 29).
Mohammedan Sportings have already sealed their back-to-back third CFL title by picking up 44 points in their quota of 17 games while East Bengal is second at 33 points and have three matches left to play in the Super Six stages.
It's a direct rival with Diamond Harbour FC for a second spot as the new football club is on 33 points as well, having played a match more. Among the crucial games that East Bengal B team, under junior head coach Bino George, are left to play in the coming days also includes a 'Boro Khela' against Mohun Bagan, who are currently sixth in the table with just 24 points in 13 games.
"We have three matches left in the CFL and we've been working hard to end the tournament on a high," said coach Bino George on the eve of the match. "We finished the group stage strongly and although we couldn't win the tournament, there are plenty of positive takeaways. We've identified some youngsters who've done well and will bolster the first team's supply line.
"Diamond Harbour is a very strong opponent and we recently played a friendly against them. Our aim is to win the remaining matches and help our players get sufficient playing time ahead of the upcoming tournaments."
