East Bengal, on the other hand, started the pre-season on a high by reaching the Durand Cup final, making fans hopeful that they have a quality team to challenge for the ISL trophy for the first time. However, in their three games, so far, the Red and Gold Brigade, won 1, lost 1, and drew 1.
Their first win of the ISL season came against Hyderabad FC in front of the home fans with Cleiton Silva scoring a stunning last-minute freekick to seal the 2-1 win. The winning momentum, however, was lost on the road as they were defeated by Bengaluru FC 2-1 in Bengaluru before the ISL went into the FIFA break.
Looking at their key players, Naorem Mahesh Singh, Javier Siverio and Borja Hernandez are the key players, apart from the Brazilian attacking midfielder. Saul Crespo remains the key man in the midfield while Souvik Chakraborty has been the sole Indian midfielder, who fits into the Carles Cuadrat's system well.
"We have played nine official games (in all competitions) until now this season," said Cuadrat ahead of the match. "We have lost only two games, but these two games, the final of the Durand Cup and the game in Kanteerava, we needed to get something out of those games.
"For me, as a coach, that's room to improve on. If you are getting better chances, if you are not conceding a lot of chances, you need to close the game and take a minimum of one point."
