The Cup tournament gets underway in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday (December 9) with East Bengal resuming hopes for title with East Bengal facing Hyderabad FC in the opening Group A match. The match starts at 2 PM IST.
East Bengal are currently without a win in their last two games but haven't lost their last four games either. Lack of goals have largely been a concern with their Spanish signing Javier Siverio Toro failing to find the net in the last 10 games.
East Bengal coach Cuadrat had to turn to his No.10 Cleiton Silva for goals and the Brazilian did a good job with five goals to his name in the ongoing ISL 2023-24 season. However, a return of 11 goals in 10 games meant the side needed more goalscoring outlets as somebody like Nandhakumar Sekar and Naorem Mahesh Singh are not proven goalscorers.
Mahesh, along with first-choice centre-back Lalchunnunga, won't be available for the Kalinga Super Cup as he is currently in Qatar with the Indian team for the AFC Asian Cup 2023. While the likes of PV Vishnu and Jesin Tk are expected to fill in for Mahesh, there are further concerns in the backline with Mandar Rao Dessai uncertain for the game.
Carles Cuadrat is likely to find the solution in playing two foreign centre-backs -- Hijazi Maher and Juan Pardo -- with the tournament allowing six foreign players in the line-up. However, the opportunity is ideal for the Spanish coach to test his bench strength, giving a chance to the likes of Athul Unnikrishnan (centre-back) and Tuhin Das (right-back), who impressed during the Calcutta Football League campaign.
As far as the midfield is concerned, the situation looks stable as Saul Crespo and Souvik Chakrabarti are likely to retain their spots in the line-up with Borja Herrera in attacking midfielder's role.
