East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan, Durand Cup Final 2023: It's the biggest match of Indian football and has everything at stake as East Bengal and Mohun Bagan square off in the Durand Cup 2023 final at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, aka Salt Lake Stadium, in Kolkata on Sunday (September 3).

Both the sides have faced once in Durand Cup 2023 already which saw East Bengal beat their arch-rivals 1-0 in the group stages through a solitary goal by Nandhakumar Sekar. Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, will like to gain back the upper hand over their crosstown rivals ahead of the Indian Super League season, where they are also defending champions.

Interestingly, the winner of the game will also have the bragging rights of being the most successful team in Asia's oldest club football tournament as both are currently joint-record holders of 16 Durand Cup titles each.

However, both the teams made it to the final amid faire share of controversy as East Bengal fans were accused of racism and hooliganism by NorthEast United supporters at the Salt Lake Stadium during the semis, which Red & Gold Brigade won dramatically in penalty shootout after going 0-2 down in regulation time earlier.

Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, were handed a controversial penalty from a dubious call by the referee as replays made it clear that FC Goa defender Jay Gupta fouled Ashique Kuruniyan right outside the box but the referee pointed to the spot instead.

Mohun Bagan eventually won the game as Armando Sadikou scored a stunning goal in the second half to put the Green and Maroon Army at the front for the rest of the night.

There is expected to be an important absence for East Bengal in the game as midfielder Souvik Chakraborty is unlikely to play the game after seeing back-to-back yellow cards in two matches.
