East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan, ISL 2023-24: Clinical Mariners claim summit after Kolkata Derby Triumph

It was the perfect Kolkata derby. From beautiful game to drama, the game had it all. Mohun Bagan dominated the first half and East Bengal dominated the second half. Both coaches received yellow cards as the heat of the match got to everyone involved. At the end, the Mariners left with a 3-1 win at the top of the table.

Mohun Bagan started the match well, but one mistake from Vishal Kaith who clashed with Cleiton Silva inside the penalty box almost cost them. Silva stepped up to take the penalty and kicked it low on the right side. However, Kaith rectified his mistake as he stretched his body and punched the ball clear to make an amazing save and denied them a lead.

Thereafter, the ball had been lingering near the East Bengal box far too long and the Mariners took advantage in the 27th minute. Dimitri Petratos took a shot from a distance which was denied by the Torch Bearers goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill, but Jason Cummings was positioned perfectly to score the goal from the rebound.

The second goal came almost too easy for the Mariners in the 36th minute. It was again Petratos who shot from the right flank and this time was denied by the barpost. However, he passed the ball from the rebound perfectly to Liston Colaco who was standing too close to the goalpost with no one marking him. Unmistakably, he put the ball in the back of the net.

Petratos then finally got his goal in the dying moments of the first half. As Nandhakumar Sekar tripped Liston just inside the box, the Mariners received a penalty. Petratos stepped up and made no mistakes. Gill got a hand on the ball, but could not stop the rocket of a shot that left Petratos' foot.

East Bengal looked far more dangerous as the second half started and they finally got one back within 10 minutes. The Mariners captain could not stop the Torch Bearers captain Silva when he put a beautiful cross to Saul Crespo inside the box. Crespo finished it perfectly to make the scoreline 1-3 in the 53rd minute.

The Silva-Crespo partnership caused the Mariners a headache. East Bengal came too close to score a few many times for Mohun Bagan's comfort. They were even denied a controversial penalty when a contact from Abhishek Suryavanshi saw Vishnu Puthiya go down inside the box. However, Puthiya saw a yellow for an earlier offense and that concluded the match.
