Emami East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giants are putting everything at stake early in the season as the two Indian football giants face off in the 132nd IndianOil Durand Cup final in a mega Kolkata Derby at the iconic Yuba Bharati Krirangan, aka Salt Lake Stadium, in Kolkata on Sunday (September 3).
Both sides reach the finals through comeback victories with East Bengal rallying to win on penalty shootout against Northeast United after going 0-2 down at this very venue. Mohun Bagan slugged it hard to win 2-1 after going 0-1 down in the first half against a dominant FC Goa with home fans backing the Green and Maroon Army at their loudest.
The victories had its fair share of controversy as East Bengal fans were accused of racism and hooliganism by Highlanders in an ugly mess post the emphatic win while Mohun Baganis had to endure ire of the Goa and East Bengal fans alike for a controversial penalty call.
All these controversies will have little implications on the East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan Kolkata Derby as both sides will only have title and the bragging rights on their mind. For Mohun Bagan a win will mean a little more as they will look to avenge their defeat to arch-rivals in the group stages, when Nandhakumar Sekar scored the solitary goal to decide the outcome.
The result meant the world to East Bengal fans, who finally won a Kolkata Derby after eight lopsided loses. History is at stake too as the winner of the Durand Cup 2023 will also become the most successful club in the history of Asia's oldest football club competition. At the moment, both sides have won the Durand Cup 16 times.
For East Bengal, it's an opportunity to win their first title in four years as the club aim for glory for the first time since becoming an Indian Super League outfit. They will have to do so without midfielder Souvik Chakraborty, who will miss the final due to suspension as he accumulated back-to-back yellow cards.
East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan starts at 4 PM IST and will be telecast Live on Sony Ten 2 and Sony Ten 2 HD while the Live streaming is on SonyLiv.
