East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan: No Kolkata Derby On 17th August? Doubts Cast On Durand Cup 2025 Quarter-Final Match

East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan: The Durand Cup 2025 knockout stage is almost here, but the big question remains - will fans get to see the Kolkata Derby in the quarter-finals? Both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant have topped their respective groups, advancing with flawless records.

Yet, uncertainty looms over who they will face next, as the organising committee is yet to release the official knockout schedule.

East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan

Reports in Bengali daily Ajkal claimed that Durand authorities have already informed both clubs of their intention to stage the high-profile clash on August 17 at the Salt Lake Stadium. The idea was to make the derby a marquee quarter-final fixture, backed by adequate police security and positioned as the highlight of the last-eight round.

Traditionally, the Durand Cup has avoided scheduling the derby in the early knockout phase, but with both sides in separate groups, this year's format presented a rare opportunity for a quarter-final meeting.

However, fresh updates from renowned Kolkata-based sports journalist, Dulal Dey suggest that the derby may not take place on August 17 after all. As reported by Anandabazar Patrika, a source from Mohun Bagan confirmed that they had heard about the possibility of a derby on that date and were preparing accordingly, with no objection to playing the match. On the other hand, an East Bengal source stated they had received no such confirmation from the organisers.

Within East Bengal's camp, opinions are divided. One section feels they are not fully prepared to face their arch-rivals in the quarters, citing that several players are yet to fully integrate into the squad. They believe a high-stakes derby requires complete readiness, something they feel is lacking at present.

In contrast, another group within the club insists that East Bengal have been in preparation mode for over six weeks, with many players - including foreign signings - joining early and building match fitness.

While speculation continues, one thing is clear - the decision rests with the Durand Cup organisers. Fans may still get their blockbuster derby, but whether it comes in the quarters or later in the tournament remains to be seen. The official knockout draw is expected soon, which should finally put the rumours to rest.
