Jordan Elsey was alert to head it away before Nandhakumar Sekar took the ball away from the box to safety!
East Bengal have put themselves in a commanding position in the group despite Mohun Bagan being ahead of them at 6 points. The Carles Cuadrat-managed side needs to ensure they win tonight's game against the new ISL-promoted side as three points from the game will help them pip their arch-rivals on the points table.
Mohun Bagan, who already have completed their group games, lost the opportunity to seal top spot in the group as East Bengal managed to beat them by a goal at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as Salt Lake Stadium, last week.
The result meant the world to East Bengal and their fans as they didn't just bring themselves back in Durand Cup 2023 with the win but also ended their eight-match losing streak in the Kolkata Derby. The winning goal came from new Indian signing Nandhakumar Sekar, who came from Odisha FC at the start of the new season.
East Bengal could have been in a better situation if they won their opening group game against Bangladesh Army, who scored twice late in the match to draw the game 2-0 for a wild celebration after the match. Foreign signings Javier Siverio and Saul Crespo found the net in positives from the game. Crespo also set up the Kolkata Derby-winning goal to earn a special place in the heart of the Red & Gold Brigade.
Punjab FC, on the other hand, are at the bottom of the table with just a point and have a slender hope of making the quarterfinals through the alternate qualification route, where two top-performing runners-up from the six groups will find place in the knockout stages.
They lost 2-0 to Mohun Bagan before being held for a draw by Bangladesh Army, who are already out of the competition as they have just two points to show from three games.
