East Bengal FC Women secured their maiden Indian Women's League (IWL) title with a gritty 1-0 win over defending champions Odisha FC at the Kalyani Stadium on Friday.
Soumya Guguloth emerged as the hero of the day, scoring the decisive goal in a tense encounter that confirmed East Bengal's dominance in the 2024-25 season.

In only their third season in India's top-tier women's football league, East Bengal have stormed to the title with a near-flawless campaign, winning against every opponent except Gokulam Kerala.
Their final league fixture, set for April 18, will now serve as a ceremonial occasion where the team will officially lift the trophy in front of their home fans.
Despite East Bengal's control in the opening half, the breakthrough proved elusive for much of the first 45 minutes. Their forward trio-Maurine Achieng, Elshaddai Acheampong, and Guguloth-created several promising opportunities but lacked the finishing touch. Achieng came closest to scoring in the 35th minute, when her header from Sandhiya Ranganathan's cross was brilliantly tipped over by Odisha goalkeeper Nandini.
Odisha FC, who have endured a dismal title defence and are now battling to avoid relegation, found a foothold late in the first half. Pyari Xaxa led their attacking charge, carving through East Bengal's otherwise solid backline but squandered her best chance with only keeper Panthoi Chanu to beat.
The final moments of the first half saw chances at both ends-Xaxa's header from a corner was cleared off the line by Karthika Angamuthu, while Acheampong's fierce long-range effort curled just wide of the far post.
Odisha came out stronger in the second half, showing more urgency in a bid to keep their survival hopes alive. They nearly drew level when Xaxa once again found herself in a great position inside the six-yard box but failed to convert a loose ball, misfiring wide to the relief of the East Bengal defenders.
That miss proved costly, as East Bengal managed to hold on to their slender lead through a resolute defensive display. The result leaves Odisha FC languishing near the bottom of the table with just one game to go and their fate hanging in the balance.
East Bengal's triumph marks a significant milestone for the club's women's team, capping off a season of resilience, teamwork, and clinical football. With the title now secured, they'll look to finish on a high and begin preparations for next season as the new champions of Indian women's football.
