Ecuador World Cup 2026 Defeat To Ivory Coast Prompts Beccacece To Call It Unfair
Amad Diallo’s 90th-minute winner gave Ivory Coast a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Philadelphia, leaving Sebastian Beccacece describing the Group E result as unjust. Ecuador struck the frame three times and created late pressure, yet Ivory Coast stayed patient. The defeat leaves Ecuador frustrated, while Ivory Coast collected a first group win.
The match also fed into a wider World Cup pattern involving South America and Africa. CONMEBOL teams did not win any of their first three fixtures for the first time since 1974, with Paraguay and Ecuador beaten and Brazil held. African sides, meanwhile, extended an unbeaten run in three straight World Cup games against South American teams.

Across the 90 minutes, both teams produced 27 shots, 15 for Ivory Coast and 12 for Ecuador, in a game that felt open but frantic. The woodwork was hit four times in total, three by Ecuador. Their 1.01 expected goals suggested limited high-quality chances, yet they joined a rare group of sides to rattle the frame three times and still lose.
| Team | Shots | Shots on Target | Goals | Woodwork Hits | Expected Goals (xG) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ivory Coast | 15 | - | 1 | 1 | - |
| Ecuador | 12 | - | 0 | 3 | 1.01 |
Ecuador became only the fourth team since 1966 to strike the woodwork three times and still lose a World Cup match. The others were the United States against Iran in 1998, Brazil versus Argentina in 1990 and Italy against Brazil in 1978. Beccacece’s side therefore joined a frustrating statistical list.
Piero Hincapié faced a difficult assignment at the back. The defender was dribbled past four times by Ivory Coast, the most for any defender in a 2026 World Cup fixture so far. That number stood out, given Hincapié had only been beaten 19 times in 39 appearances for Arsenal during the 2025-26 season.
"It hurts because it was an unfair defeat, Beccacece told reporters. I think there are very strong arguments to clearly show that the team competed very well, had the clearest chances and could have won the match, but because of one detail at the end, we leave with nothing."
Beccacece’s frustration stemmed from Ecuador’s belief that the best openings had fallen their way, especially around their three efforts against the frame. The coach accepted the xG data suggested limited clear chances, yet stressed the team’s overall control for long spells. One late lapse, though, meant Diallo could settle the contest.
Ecuador vs Ivory Coast World Cup milestones for African and South American teams
African sides are now on a three-match unbeaten World Cup sequence against South American opposition. That run began with Cameroon’s 1-0 victory over Brazil at Qatar 2022, then continued through Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Brazil on Saturday. Ivory Coast’s win over Ecuador extended that stretch and underlined a changing competitive balance.
For Ivory Coast, this was a landmark success. Ivory Coast defeated a South American team at a World Cup for the first time, ending a sequence of three defeats. Those losses had come against Argentina in 2006, Brazil in 2010 and Colombia in 2014. The latest result therefore carried extra historical weight for the squad.
Ecuador vs Ivory Coast World Cup youth, nerves and Emerse Fae’s assessment
The starting line-up selected by Emerse Fae was Ivory Coast’s youngest at a World Cup since facing Serbia in 2006. The average age stood at 26 years and 111 days, compared to 26 years and 33 days in that previous match. Fae relied on a full squad experiencing the tournament stage for the first time.
All 26 Ivory Coast players are making a World Cup debut at this tournament, something Fae highlighted when reflecting on the evening. The coach felt the inexperience created tension during the opening half, before a more assertive approach after the break allowed attacking players to impose themselves and pin Ecuador deeper.
"It's the first World Cup for all 26 players, a first outing for them, so it was difficult, there was some doubt, there was some fear, said Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae. In the second half, we took more risks, were more concentrated, made fewer individual mistakes. Plus, we have great attacking players, like Yan, like Amad, and they were able to get more on the ball, push Ecuador back. We respected Ecuador very much in the first half, but over time we grew more confident, and then we managed to hurt them."
The late goal and contrasting narratives left Group E delicately balanced. Ivory Coast gained belief from a first World Cup win over South American opposition, helped by a young squad growing in confidence. Ecuador, meanwhile, were left to reflect on missed opportunities and an outcome Beccacece viewed as harsh, despite the underlying numbers.
