It is fair to say Belgium superstar Eder Hazard's move to Real Madrid has not happened as per expectations. Having excelled over a seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge, Hazard opted for Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2019. At 28 years of age, he was arguably one of the best players in Europe before the jump. Hazard scored 110 goals for Chelsea, and won six major honors - including two Premier League titles and two Europa Leagues at Chelsea.
Unsurprisingly Real Madrid came calling for the Belgian superstar who was destined to be their next great Galactico signing in 2019. They paid an initial £89million for his services however four years later, it now seems like a disaster.
Hazard's struggle at Real Madrid
Over his four years stay at Santiago Bernabeu, Hazard's form and fitness have been elusive where he has managed just seven goals and 11 assists in 73 total games. In all competitions, this season Hazard has only featured for 296 minutes having not played for the club in more than two months. Ancelotti and the Madrid management reportedly have lost faith in him, and a decision is likely to take place ahead of next season.
Hazard's future at Bernabeu
Real Madrid and Hazard's agents are scheduled to discuss his future in the coming month as it is widely believed that splitting ways would be the wisest course of action at this time for everyone involved. Yet, despite the uncertainty surrounding his playing future at the club, the Belgian will reportedly be ready to stay at Real Madrid until the conclusion of his contract, which runs until June 2024. One of the big reasons behind his lingering is apparently his son Leo, 10 who joined Real's youth academy only this year.
Moreover, Hazard's salary is now the highest in the team, thus it would be difficult for him to switch to another team with the same wage. Now that he has made up his mind to stay, he plans to join players like Gareth Bale, Isco, and Mariano Diaz in seeing out his contract with the team. But there is also a possibility of Real Madrid cutting ties with him by terminating his contract with a pay-out.
Nevertheless, whatever happens, it is hard to imagine Eden Hazard having a fruitful future at Bernabeu anymore. He has been linked with moves to Premier League and MLS earlier in the season and that could resurface in next summer again. It now remains to be what his future beholds.
