Kolkata, March 12: Summer of 2017 seemed like a dream for Ligue 1 giants Paris-Saint Germain. Fast forward just seven months, the French side are in turmoil. Out of the Champions League yet again, speculations of an unsettled Neymar leaving the club and now their most prolific striker Edinson Cavani is also rumoured to be eyeing a Premier League move.
After PSG’s failure to advance beyond the round of 16 in the Champions League this season, the PSG dugout wears a deserted look. Coach Unai Emery is on the firing line and Neymar is reportedly eyeing a move to La Liga. In the midst all this, comes the rumours of the Uruguayan striker leaving Paris for a Premier Club.
French newspaper, Le Parisien, reported that Cavani was keen on leaving the Parisian club, although the forward himself has made no public statements to that end. PSG signed Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to support Cavani upfront. To a degree, this worked with the French giants breaking all sorts of scoring records, especially in the group stage of the Champions League, and they are on course to winning the Ligue 1 title.
But there has been no progress when Champions League knockout stage is considered. While PSG may have been unlucky to draw the defending champions Real Madrid, nothing can hold the fact that they are out of Europe’s elite tournament. To add to that, strained relationship between Cavani and Neymar over spot-kick duties has not helped their cause either.
However, the report also claims that Cavani might as well stay. In a scenario where Neymar goes to Real and Emery is replaced by someone preferred by Cavani. Manchester United and Chelsea have been on red-alert following this rumour with both ready to battle out his £53mn price tag.
