Egypt Tops Group G After Salah-Influenced 3-1 Win Over New Zealand

Egypt claimed a landmark 3-1 victory over New Zealand at BC Place Vancouver, securing the nation’s first-ever World Cup win. Captain Mohamed Salah scored and assisted, lifting Egypt to the top of Group G and placing the Pharaohs in a strong position to advance to the knockout rounds with one group match remaining.

Salah’s influence stretched far beyond the headline goal and assist. The forward led the match for shots, penalty-area touches and chances created, underlining why Egypt relied on Salah in key moments. Alongside Mostafa Zico, Salah also entered Egyptian World Cup history for direct involvement in goals and assists during a single match.

Egypt tops Group G with Salah-led win

Statistically, Salah produced five shots, 13 touches in the opposition box and created five chances, more than any other player. Both Salah and Zico became the first Egyptians to both score and assist in a World Cup fixture. Salah also moved clear of Abdel Fawzi as Egypt’s leading World Cup goalscorer, with three goals across multiple tournaments.

Egypt’s attacking display delivered several national milestones. This was the first time Egypt scored three goals in a World Cup game. Substitute Trezeguet added another first by becoming the only Egyptian to score as a substitute at the tournament. Egypt’s pressure showed in the underlying numbers, with 1.96 expected goals from 19 attempts versus New Zealand’s 1.47 from 12 shots.

Team Goals Shots Expected Goals (xG)
Egypt 3 19 1.96
New Zealand 1 12 1.47

The match did not begin in Egypt’s favour. New Zealand defender Finn Surman rose highest at a corner in the 15th minute, meeting Tim Payne’s delivery with a firm header to put the All Whites ahead. That goal left Egypt chasing the game and briefly pushed New Zealand into a promising position in Group G.

Egypt responded by controlling long spells of possession and creating steady pressure around the New Zealand box. Emam Ashour slid one effort wide before the break, while Salah poked an effort on target but without enough power. The Pharaohs repeatedly advanced into dangerous positions yet needed greater precision to break New Zealand’s resistance.

The breakthrough finally came in the 58th minute. Zico attacked a cross aggressively, directing a powerful header that New Zealand goalkeeper Max Crocombe could not keep out. That equaliser shifted the momentum decisively. Egypt’s players pushed forward with greater confidence, while New Zealand dropped deeper and struggled to regain control.

Egypt moved in front soon after through a swift counter-attack. Salah exchanged a one-two with Zico and drove into space before curling a precise finish past Crocombe into the bottom-left corner. The goal reflected Salah’s composure under pressure and rewarded Egypt’s willingness to transition at speed when opportunities appeared.

Trezeguet, introduced from the bench, sealed the result in the 82nd minute. The winger darted to the near post and converted from Salah’s corner, giving Egypt a two-goal cushion. Deep into stoppage time, Zizo rounded Crocombe and seemed certain to make it 4-1, but the goalkeeper recovered to block the shot.

Egypt’s performance generated immediate reaction on social media, particularly from supporters following the national team’s World Cup campaign.

Group G standings Egypt World Cup qualification picture

Following this win, Egypt sat top of Group G and held a clear advantage. A draw against Iran in the final group fixture would guarantee at least second place and a spot in the knockout rounds. However, the group remained open after Belgium and Iran drew earlier on Sunday, keeping qualification scenarios alive for all sides.

Team Next Match Qualification Requirement
Egypt vs Iran Needs at least a draw for top-two finish
New Zealand vs Belgium Must win to stay in qualification contention

New Zealand’s hopes were damaged but not removed by the defeat. Victory over Belgium in the final Group G fixture could still send New Zealand into the last sixteen, depending on other results. For Egypt, this match marked a historic first World Cup win, built on Salah’s leadership, Zico’s contributions and decisive late impact from Trezeguet.
