Jonas Eidevall, the former Arsenal manager, recently revealed the financial constraints he faced at the club. He had to decide between signing Mariona Caldentey or extending Vivianne Miedema's contract. Eidevall, who left Arsenal last October and now coaches San Diego Wave, admitted that this decision strained his relationship with fans. Miedema eventually joined Manchester City as a free agent.Eidevall explained to Aftonbladet that Arsenal's budget limitations forced him to choose between Caldentey and Miedema. "You have a limited budget that you have to deal with," he said. The club couldn't afford both players, so a choice was necessary. This situation wasn't something he could openly discuss at press conferences.Arsenal signed Caldentey from Barcelona after Miedema's departure. Eidevall felt the decision was best for the club despite its challenges. His tenure at Arsenal saw them win two Women's League Cup titles, but they struggled early in the season before his resignation.Eidevall believed not renewing Miedema's contract affected his rapport with supporters and impacted team performance. "I think that when we didn’t renew Miedema’s contract, my relationship at the time with the fans was hurting the team," he told Sports Illustrated. He felt leaving was necessary for the team's success.Miedema had an impressive record at Arsenal, scoring 125 goals in 172 matches over seven seasons. Her departure marked a significant change for both her and the club. Eidevall acknowledged it was a tough personal decision but prioritised what he thought was best for Arsenal.
