It's the biggest match of Spanish football, if not in the entire world, as footballing giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are colliding once again, and for the first time this season in El Clasico of La Liga at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Barcelona on Saturday afternoon (7:45 PM IST).
(Scroll below for Live Updates) The stadium is the temporary home for Barcelona with their iconic Camp Nou currently undergoing some major renovations. Defending champions Barcelona are yet to lose a match in La Liga this season but are behind arch-rivals Real Madrid, who are a point ahead (25 points in total) of Barca despite losing a game this season.
That's because Barcelona were held for a draw in three of their Liga matches while Real Madrid won eight of the 10 matches. The three clubs who managed to hold Barcelona for a draw were Getafe, Mallorca, and Granada while Real Madrid lost to their neighbours Atletico Madrid 3-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano last month. Their form against quality teams in the Liga has been worrying as they were also held 1-1 by Sevilla in their sole draw of the season.
Apart from facing Barcelona in front of their loud fans, Real Madrid are at a further disadvantage as they just travelled to Portugal to beat Braga in the UEFA Champions League while Barca had the luxury of beating Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 at home in the group stages of the European competition.
Last weekend, they also got the better of Athletic Bilbao with teenage debutant Marc Guiu scoring a historic goal as the winner. The El Clasico form has been in their favour too as they won their last two of the three Liga matches against Real Madrid, including 2-1 win in the last Clasico at Camp Nou.
For Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham's form will be crucial as the Englishman has scored 11 goals and assisted three in 12 matches in La Liga 2023-24. This match, however, will test his grit as he makes El Clasico debut. Real madrid will also take comfort from the fact that their last El Clasio ended a 4-0 triumph in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final back in March.
