The urge to continue the winning momentum will mean a little to Real Madrid as they will play for everything in a friendly match against arch-rivals Barcelona in a pre-season friendly tournament, Soccer Champions Tour 2023, at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday night (Sunday morning).
Real Madrid defeated AC Milan and Manchester United in the first two games of the US Tour in contrasting wins as the Carlo Ancelloti-managed side started the 2023-24 season without their star striker Karim Benzema, who is off to Saudi Arabia in a big-money move.
The 14-time European champions gained early momentum in the season as they defeated AC Milan 3-2 in a comeback win with Federico Valverde scoring a brace before Vinicius Junior scored the winning goal. The second game against Manchester United saw former Real Madrid Castilla striker Joselu score a stunning bicycle-kick goal late in the game after Jude Bellingham scored his debut goal for Real Madrid early.
FC Barcelona, on the other hand, started the season on a sour note with the opening pre-season game of the Soccer Champions Tour 2023 against Juventus was called after several players suffered from ill-health upon arrival to the USA.
The Xavi Hernandez-managed side lost 3-5 to Arsenal in their eventual opening match of the tour played in California. Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres scored goals but Leandro Trossard's double strike followed by Fabio Vieira's late goal sealed the game for the North London side.
As far as injuries are concerned, defender Inigo Martinez debut at Barcelona is likely to wait as the Basque is yet to recover from a foot injury while fellow centre-back Clement Lenglet and Gavi (back injury) are uncertain for the game. Left-back Alejandro Balde may start after playing the second half against Arsenal upon recovery from an ankle injury.
On the other hand, new arrival Inigo Martinez is still on the road to recovery from his troublesome foot injury and is still waiting for his Barcelona baptism, while Gavi (back) and Clement Lenglet (unspecified) are also touch-and-go.
For Real Madrid, teenager Arda Guler is yet to make his debut following a thigh niggle while Dani Ceballos is recuperating from a hamstring injury. Thibaut Courtois may start as the keeper for the big pre-season game after Andriy Lunin played the first two games.
