Eloy Room Makes 15 Saves In One Of The Greatest World Cup Goalkeeping Displays Ever
Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room delivered one of the greatest goalkeeping performances in FIFA World Cup history to help his country secure its first-ever point at the tournament, frustrating Ecuador in a remarkable 0-0 draw in Kansas City on Saturday.
The 37-year-old produced a staggering 15 saves as Curaçao withstood relentless pressure from a heavily favoured Ecuador side, earning a result that will go down as one of the biggest moments in the island nation's football history.

While Ecuador dominated proceedings and peppered the Curaçao goal throughout the contest, Room stood firm time and again to deny La Tri and keep his side alive in Group E.
One Save Shy Of A World Cup Record
Room's 15-save performance was just one short of the World Cup record of 16, set by former United States goalkeeper Tim Howard against Belgium at the 2014 tournament.
The veteran shot-stopper, who famously helped Curaçao qualify for its maiden World Cup appearance, produced a catalogue of stunning stops against an Ecuador attack that simply could not find a way past him.
His biggest early intervention came when veteran striker Enner Valencia broke through with only Room to beat. The goalkeeper guessed correctly and pushed away the effort to preserve parity.
As Ecuador increased the pressure after the break, Room elevated his performance even further.
He denied Moises Caicedo with a spectacular stop before producing another brilliant save from a Valencia header. Moments later, he made two more reflex saves in quick succession from an Ecuador corner as Curaçao desperately clung on.
It was a performance that transformed the match from a routine Ecuador victory into a historic night for one of the smallest nations at the tournament.
Curaçao Creates World Cup History
The draw earned Curaçao its first point at a FIFA World Cup, a landmark achievement for a nation with a population of roughly 150,000 people.
Just days after suffering a humbling 7-1 defeat against Germany, Dick Advocaat's side responded with remarkable resilience and organisation.
Although Ecuador controlled possession and created the majority of chances, Curaçao also showed flashes of attacking intent, particularly during the first half when they repeatedly found space through the middle of the Ecuador defence.
However, the night belonged to Room.
The goalkeeper's heroics ensured that Curaçao emerged with a result that few had predicted before kick-off.
Ecuador Left Facing Elimination Battle
For Ecuador, the stalemate could prove costly.
Earlier in the day, Germany secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast, a result that guaranteed the Germans a place in the knockout rounds and increased the pressure on Ecuador.
The draw leaves La Tri needing a result against Germany in their final group-stage match to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Despite creating enough opportunities to comfortably win the game, Ecuador could find no way past Room, whose performance will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the defining goalkeeping displays of World Cup 2026.
Sometimes a draw can feel like a defeat. For Ecuador, this was one of those nights.
For Curaçao, it felt like a victory.
