Unai Emery Commends Aston Villa Substitutes For Their Impact In Victory Over Southampton

Unai Emery highlighted the significant contributions of Aston Villa's substitutes in their 3-0 win against Southampton. The players' late goals secured the victory, showcasing the team's depth and competitive spirit.

Aston Villa's substitutes played a crucial role in their 3-0 victory over Southampton in the Premier League. Unai Emery praised the impact of Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen, and John McGinn, who all scored after coming off the bench. Despite Marco Asensio missing two penalties, Villa's substitutes have now contributed 10 goals this season, with five in the last three matches.

Southampton faced their 26th defeat of the season, marking their highest number of losses in a single campaign. Their relegation to the Championship was confirmed after losing to Tottenham. Ivan Juric resigned as manager following that match. Interim boss Simon Rusk remains optimistic despite the loss to Villa, highlighting positives from their performance.

Emery Praises Villa Subs After Southampton Win

Emery emphasized how vital the substitutes were in maintaining Villa's winning streak. "We respect them [Southampton]," he told Premier League Productions. He noted that while they dominated possession in the first half, they struggled to create clear chances. The introduction of fast players in the second half helped push for more opportunities.

The Saints managed to hold Villa at bay for nearly 70 minutes before conceding. Rusk acknowledged his team's defensive efforts but expressed disappointment with how they conceded the first goal in the 73rd minute. "We had a clean sheet until then," he told BBC Match of the Day.

Rusk believes there is still something to build on despite their current situation. "The players gave their all," he said, expressing confidence that they can bounce back and work hard for future matches. He stressed treating upcoming games with the same seriousness as earlier ones.

Villa's recent form has been bolstered by January signings, which Emery credits for making them more competitive. Injuries had previously hindered consistent performances throughout 90 minutes, but new additions have strengthened their squad depth.

The Saints' interim manager remains hopeful about his team's resilience and ability to maintain belief despite facing a top team like Villa. "We need to maintain our belief," Rusk stated, focusing on continuing hard work and treating each game with importance.

As Aston Villa continues their successful run, Southampton aims to regroup and find positives amid challenges. Both teams are looking forward to upcoming fixtures with different objectives: Villa aiming for further victories and Southampton seeking improvement and stability.
