Aston Villa secured a 1-0 win over Fenerbahce in Turkiye, sealing top spot in their Europa League group and a place in the last 16. Jadon Sancho’s first-half header decided a tense match, played in a hostile atmosphere but managed with control by Unai Emery’s side.

The result carried extra weight for Emery, who took charge of his 100th Europa League match since 2009-10. The head coach became the first manager to reach that total in the competition, adding another landmark night to a career heavily linked with European football.

Emery’s 100 Europa League games are spread across five clubs, underlining long-term experience in the tournament. The breakdown includes Valencia (20 matches), Sevilla (39), Arsenal (20), Villarreal (14) and now Aston Villa (seven). Villa’s victory in Istanbul added another chapter to that extended record.

Aston Villa had to manage intense pressure from the Fenerbahce crowd throughout the contest. Emery’s team stayed compact without the ball and relied on fast transitions, with Sancho finishing one such move. Aston Villa also saw another effort ruled out by VAR, while Fenerbahce had a goal disallowed as well.

Emery underlined the role of the travelling Aston Villa support, highlighting how the away section influenced the performance. "I’m thankful to our 2,000 supporters who were helping us here from Birmingham, Aston Villa supporters," said Emery. The head coach pointed to that backing as important in a difficult away setting.

"In this stadium, how they are pushing here with the supporters, really huge atmosphere. How we were feeling, our supporters supporting us and helping us, it was really fantastic. And then we played the match with discipline. We were defensively, getting a huge responsibility to stop them, to avoid getting in our box creating chances and we did. We had a lot of transition to score one more, one goal like we did and more. And when we could dominate with the ball as well, we were really getting good positions on the field with the players. Every player did a really huge effort and playing in the commitment we need, fantastic in our gameplan. We suffered a little bit in the second half for 15 mins, they scored one goal and were refused by VAR. But it was circumstantial because overall we created more chances, we had another goal as well refused by VAR and we deserved to win."

The combination of a clean sheet, Sancho’s decisive goal and Emery’s growing Europa League record leaves Aston Villa in a strong position heading into the last 16. The performance in Turkiye showed resilience under pressure, tactical discipline and effective support from travelling fans during a demanding European night.
