Unai Emery Expresses Pride In Aston Villa's Champions League Efforts Despite Exit

Aston Villa's Unai Emery praised his team's resilience in their Champions League quarter-final despite a narrow aggregate loss. He emphasised the importance of aiming for European competition next season.

Aston Villa's head coach, Unai Emery, expressed pride in his team's performance despite their 5-4 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals. Villa managed a 3-2 victory in the second leg at Villa Park after initially trailing 2-0. Although they couldn't equalise the tie, Emery remained optimistic about the team's progress and future aspirations.

Emery acknowledged the team's efforts and emphasised their growth. "I am very proud of everything," he stated to Amazon Prime post-match. He highlighted their competitive spirit over both legs and expressed his desire to continue building success with Aston Villa. Emery praised the fans for their support, noting their energy even when Villa was behind.

Emery Proud of Villa's Champions League Performance

Ezri Konsa scored to give Villa the lead on the night, following Marcus Rashford's assist. Konsa had another chance to level the aggregate score but missed a header. Despite this, he shared his manager's pride but also felt disappointed not to advance further. "Very proud of the boys and what we did tonight," Konsa remarked during an interview with Amazon Prime.

Konsa reflected on their resilience after conceding two early goals. "The two goals at the start killed us but we showed great belief and character," he said. He acknowledged Gianluigi Donnarumma's crucial saves and expressed determination to compete at this level again next season. Konsa admitted missing a key header but remained positive about their overall performance.

Similarly, Aston Villa captain John McGinn shared his thoughts with TNT Sports, expressing both disappointment and pride in their efforts against PSG. "Obvious disappointment but I am proud of my team-mates, proud of the club," McGinn stated. He recognised how close they came to forcing extra-time and praised their fight against one of football's elite teams.

Villa's unbeaten run at home during this Champions League campaign was celebrated by fans and players alike. A tweet from Aston Villa's official account read: "Unbeaten at Villa Park throughout our Champions League campaign. We couldn't have done it without you, Villans."

Looking ahead, Emery stressed the importance of securing European competition for next season as a primary goal. The challenge remains for Aston Villa to qualify for Europe through their remaining six matches in domestic competitions. The team aims to return stronger and continue competing at the highest level in future seasons.

Aston Villa's journey in this year's Champions League showcased their potential and determination against top-tier opponents like PSG. Their focus now shifts towards achieving European qualification once more, driven by lessons learned from this campaign and a collective ambition for continued success on the international stage.
