Unai Emery Calls For Improvement From Aston Villa Following Loss To Liverpool
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has called for his team to enhance their performance following a 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield. This defeat marks Villa's fourth consecutive loss across all competitions, a streak not seen since April 2022. The team also suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time since May 2023, with goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah widening Liverpool's lead at the top.
Villa's recent struggles have been compounded by injuries. Tyrone Mings recently returned from a long-term injury, but Jacob Ramsey picked up a suspected hamstring issue during the first half against Liverpool. Despite these setbacks, Emery remains hopeful about his team's potential to improve and regain last season's form.

Emery acknowledged that some players are still recovering from long injuries and are not yet performing at last year's level. "We have to keep improving, recover some players who have just come back after long injuries," he told TNT Sports. He emphasised the need for maintaining a positive attitude and accepting recent results as part of their journey.
During the match, Villa created several scoring opportunities. Amadou Onana and Diego Carlos forced Liverpool's goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher into making crucial saves. Villa recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.5 compared to Liverpool's 2.02, indicating they had chances to score but failed to capitalise on them.
Villa managed 12 shots in total, just two fewer than Liverpool's 14, with both teams having nine shots inside the box. Despite this effort, Villa's appeals for a penalty were dismissed when Pau Torres was pulled down in the box before Liverpool's second goal. Emery expressed his frustration with the decision but accepted it as part of the game.
Building Consistency and Future Outlook
Emery stressed the importance of consistency in building a competitive team. "We have to try to be consistent in how we are building and responding," he stated on the Premier League’s official website. He believes that despite losing to a strong title contender like Liverpool, Villa is on the right path towards improvement.
Reflecting on Liverpool’s performance, Emery acknowledged their strength as title contenders but remained optimistic about Villa’s progress. "They started better than us, they are contenders to win the title," he said. However, he remains confident in his team's ability to find their way through this challenging period.
Despite recent setbacks, Emery remains positive about Aston Villa’s future prospects in the league. He is determined to guide his team back to their best form by focusing on consistency and resilience in upcoming matches.
