Emery Remains Hopeful After Aston Villa's Expected Defeat To PSG In Champions League Match

Unai Emery expressed confidence following Aston Villa's 3-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, stating the result was as anticipated. He believes in a potential comeback during the second leg at Villa Park.

Aston Villa's manager, Unai Emery, expressed that their 3-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League was anticipated. Despite the defeat, he remains hopeful for a comeback in the second leg. Villa, considered underdogs, briefly led with Morgan Rogers' goal before PSG took control. Desire Doue equalised in the 39th minute, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's impressive strike put PSG ahead.

Villa aimed to keep PSG at bay by defending deep, but Nuno Mendes secured a third goal for PSG during stoppage time. The match statistics highlighted PSG's dominance with 29 shots compared to Villa's seven. This marked the fifth instance since last season where PSG had 20 more shots than their opponents in a Champions League match, equalling Manchester City's record.

Emery Optimistic After Villa's PSG Defeat

PSG also achieved their highest passing accuracy in a Champions League game since records began in 2003-04, with an impressive 94.5%. This is the second-highest accuracy recorded by any team in the knockout rounds. Despite conceding late, Emery was not overly discouraged and emphasised that his team will adopt a more positive approach at home next Tuesday.

Emery stated that the outcome was largely expected, predicting either a 2-1 or 3-1 scoreline before the match. He remains optimistic about playing at home next week, believing that Villa Park and their supporters will provide strength. "Today, we needed to be disciplined in defence," he told TNT Sports.

Even when trailing 2-1, Villa managed three attempts inside PSG's box. Emery acknowledged that they must win at home by more than one goal to advance. In the first half, Villa created several opportunities but lacked clinical finishing in the second half.

Rogers' Determination and Upcoming Fixtures

Morgan Rogers echoed Emery's sentiments of hope despite the challenging situation against one of the tournament favourites. "We knew it would be difficult and knew how deadly they are," Rogers said. He stressed that they did not travel to Paris just to watch but to compete.

Rogers acknowledged that while the scoreline is unfavourable, there is another game to turn things around. "We're here for a reason," he added. With nothing to lose and quality players capable of competing globally, Rogers believes they can still change their fortunes.

Before facing PSG again, Villa will play against already relegated Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.
