Villa Coach Emery Urges Focus As Lille Pose Massive Test In Europa League Last-16

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery warns of a difficult first leg against Lille in the Europa League last-16, emphasising emotional control, strong structure, and enjoyment of the match atmosphere. Villa aim to extend their European winning run while navigating Lille's home advantage.

Unai Emery says Aston Villa face a huge test against Lille in the Europa League last-16, even as Villa arrive in strong form. The first leg takes place at the Decathlon Arena on Thursday, before the return at Villa Park. Emery also urges the squad to enjoy the whole experience around this high-pressure tie.

Villa travel to France on a club-record run of five straight Europa League victories, the longest winning sequence in Aston Villa’s European history. That form gives confidence, yet Emery stresses that knockout football can change quickly. Lille hold home advantage first, which Emery views as a major factor in this two-leg contest.

Emery urges focus for Lille clash

Reflecting on the scale of the challenge, Emery did not hide the difficulty he expects at the Decathlon Arena. "Of course, its a massive test tomorrow," Emery said at Wednesday's pre-match press conference. The head coach underlined that this tie is decided over two matches and that Villa must prepare for every scenario across both legs.

Emery explained in detail how he wants Aston Villa to approach this Europa League clash with Lille. "Two matches, two legs, the second leg as well, of course, we will play at home. But my expectation is very difficult, and my expectation, before the matches, of course, is to be so focused and be trying to build our structure strongly and try to feel comfortable and try to respect them. And everything will happen tomorrow, still 90 minutes to play at home, and of course, with our supporters, it will be a second leg important for us as to how we can respond as well. And enjoy the way. The last message is that we must enjoy. Enjoy here, preparing the game, here today, in the hotel tomorrow, playing the match, enjoying the atmosphere, enjoying as well, how we are responding tomorrow on the field."

Despite their current run, Aston Villa carry a poor record when playing European matches in France. Villa have never won away in France across six attempts in UEFA competition. That sequence includes two draws and four defeats, with losses in each of the last three trips, even when qualifiers are included.

Aston Villa Lille Europa League emotions and crowd influence

Emery highlighted that handling emotions will be as important as tactics when Aston Villa visit Lille. "In our structure, we are speaking about the emotions inside as well. We must control our collective emotions, our individual emotions, but tomorrow we are going to play a match," he added, stressing mental balance in a demanding environment.

The coach recalled previous experiences in Lille to explain the likely atmosphere awaiting Aston Villa in this Europa League tie. "Two years ago, playing here against Lille, of course, the French crowd here, the supporters of Lille, they weretrying to support their team. They were trying to support their players and they weretrying as well to push our players in different ways."

Emery then set out how he wants Villa to respond under pressure at the Decathlon Arena. "But tomorrow, we want to play a game, and we want to be focused on the game. We are going to try to get stronger, our focus, collectively and individually each player, and try to protect our emotions together." For Emery, that mindset, combined with supporter backing at Villa Park, will shape how the tie develops.
