Emma Hayes expressed gratitude to her late father after leading the United States to Olympic gold at Paris 2024. The USA triumphed over Brazil 1-0 in the final at Parc des Princes, thanks to Mallory Swanson's goal just before the hour mark. Hayes, who became the USWNT head coach in May after leaving Chelsea, celebrated success in her first tournament.
Speaking to Discovery+ during the celebrations, Hayes said: "I'm very emotional. It's been a dream of mine. I have to thank my dad - he's the one who pushed me to this position, to be able to come and coach an unbelievable group of players." Her father, whom she has often credited as a cornerstone in her football career, passed away last year.

Hayes wore her father's necklace during the match. "I've got my dad's necklace on," she mentioned post-match. "It's got an American eagle, and he was with me today and that helped." She also praised the crowd and Brazil's performance, adding, "The crowd were tremendous. Brazil were tremendous. I'm just speechless. I'm in shock."
The United States Women's National Soccer Team (@USWNT) shared their excitement on Twitter with a celebratory post on August 10, 2024.
This victory marks the United States' fifth Olympic gold in women's football - four more than any other nation - and their first since 2012. Swanson's goal came on her landmark 100th senior appearance for her national side, securing the win in the French capital.
Hayes' tenure has seen a turnaround for the team after disappointing performances at the 2020 Games and 2023 World Cup. "They have received me so well and taken on board everything I've asked," Hayes added. "They're tremendous people, players and role models and I love them."
Brazil remains without an Olympic gold in women's football despite reaching their third runners-up finish. They previously fell short in 2004 and 2008 as well.
The latest triumph for the USA comes just ten games into Hayes' leadership, showcasing a significant improvement from past tournaments.
The conclusion of this tournament highlights both the resilience of Hayes' squad and her ability to inspire them towards victory.
