England Advances To Euro 2025 Last 16 After Dominating Wales In Group Stage Match

Ella Toone's performance leads England to a commanding 6-1 victory over Wales, securing their place in the Euro 2025 last 16. Confidence builds as they prepare to face Sweden.

England's women's football team secured a spot in the Euro 2025 last 16 after a decisive 6-1 victory over Wales. This win was crucial for the Lionesses, who needed a victory in their final group match to advance, following a loss to France and a win against the Netherlands. Ella Toone expressed confidence, suggesting Sweden should be wary of facing England next.

Georgia Stanway initiated England's scoring spree by converting a penalty just 13 minutes into the match. Ella Toone followed with another goal eight minutes later. Toone also assisted Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo, contributing significantly to England's first-half dominance. Her involvement in three goals marked her fifth such performance for England since her debut in February 2021.

England Secures Euro 2025 Knockout Stage Spot

In the second half, Beth Mead added to England's tally with a goal at the 72-minute mark. Although Wales managed a consolation goal through Hannah Cain four minutes later, Aggie Beever-Jones sealed England's victory with her first major tournament goal in the final minute. This result placed England second in Group D behind France, who maintained an unbeaten record by defeating the Netherlands 5-2.

Wales ended their campaign at the bottom of the group, having lost all their matches. The Netherlands also missed out on advancing after consecutive losses. Reflecting on England's performance, Toone expressed satisfaction and confidence about facing Sweden, recalling their semi-final triumph over them at Euro 2022.

Sarina Wiegman has now achieved more wins than any other manager at the Women's Euros, securing her 14th victory in this competition. She acknowledged that losing to France was challenging but believes it strengthened England for future matches. Wiegman emphasised that playing well is crucial and praised Alessia Russo for scoring.

England has consistently progressed from the group stage in their last six major tournaments since the 2015 World Cup. They are one of only three European teams to achieve this feat alongside Sweden and France. Wiegman highlighted how losing their opening game created urgency and unity within the team, which she views positively.

Earning early goals was vital against Wales' defensive setup, according to Toone. She noted that Sweden is strong on counter-attacks but remains confident about England's chances against them. "We watched Sweden... they looked really good," she said, adding that despite this, "we're feeling confident; they should be scared."
