Lee Carsley Praises England's Progressive Football Style Before Thomas Tuchel Takes Over

Lee Carsley reflects on his interim coaching success with England, noting a shift to a more progressive style. Under his leadership, the team achieved significant possession and passing statistics before Thomas Tuchel takes charge.

Lee Carsley expressed pride in how England's players embraced a more forward-thinking style during his time as interim coach. Before Thomas Tuchel takes over in January, England secured a 5-0 victory against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday. This marked their fifth win in six matches under Carsley's guidance.

Carsley has been praised for implementing a high-pressing, possession-focused approach during his successful tenure as England Under-21 manager. He led the team to a European Championship victory last year. In six Nations League games with Carsley, England's senior team averaged 69.3% possession and completed 624.8 passes per match, alongside 16 shots and an expected goals (xG) rate of 1.95.

Carsley Highlights England's New Football Approach

At Euro 2024, under Gareth Southgate, England averaged 55.4% possession, made 536 passes, took 10.8 shots, and had an xG of 0.88 per match, finishing as runners-up to Spain. After his final game in charge, Carsley commended the players for smoothly adapting to a new playing style.

"I definitely felt like I have been out of my comfort zone but not beyond my capabilities," Carsley stated. "I never felt at any point I was drowning or I was struggling. I've taken the confidence that myself and the rest of the staff will be okay."

Carsley noted that they grew stronger over time and learned much about themselves in unfamiliar roles. He found it most gratifying to see younger players emerging successfully. "We have tried change things," he said, emphasizing their efforts to adapt their style by increasing control and possession without resistance from the players.

Their recent win was England's largest margin under a departing manager since Graham Taylor's team defeated San Marino 7-1 in November 1993. Despite achieving automatic promotion back to League A of the Nations League, Carsley expressed some regret over their sole defeat—a 2-1 loss to Greece at Wembley last month.

Looking Forward

"Even though we won five of the six, I straight away go back to that game we should have won at Wembley," Carsley added. "It's definitely a lonely place in that dugout when you're not winning at Wembley." He remains committed to continuous improvement for both players and staff.

The transition period under Carsley's leadership has set a solid foundation for Tuchel's upcoming tenure with England's national team. The focus on possession and pressing has prepared the squad for future challenges while nurturing young talent within the ranks.
