England World Cup Unity: Guehi Urges Team To Stick Together Ahead Of Kick-off

Marc Guehi has urged England to "stick together" after a winless March window left questions over their World Cup form, with a 1-0 defeat against Japan at Wembley Stadium following a 1-1 draw against Uruguay.

England lacked several established names, including captain Harry Kane, against Japan and struggled to find rhythm in attack. Kaoru Mitoma scored the only goal in the first half, and England failed to find a response despite long spells of possession.

England urged to stick together for World Cup

The setback against Japan came four days after England drew 1-1 with Uruguay, completing their final March fixtures without a victory. These were the last games before Thomas Tuchel selects the squad that will travel to the World Cup.

England’s attacking numbers underlined the frustration inside Wembley Stadium. The Three Lions attempted 19 shots but managed only four efforts on target, producing just 0.9 expected goals, and the crowd responded with boos at full-time following another blunt display.

Guehi accepted the criticism but stressed the need for perspective, especially so close to a major tournament. "We can't sugarcoat it," said Guehi. "It's always disappointing. You want to be winning those games, but the most important [thing] is going to the World Cup and being ready for that."

England’s schedule offers limited time to adjust before the tournament. The team will meet New Zealand and Costa Rica in June for their final warm-up friendlies, then begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17.

Reflecting on England’s broader tournament history, Guehi pointed to past examples where performances had improved when it mattered. "I think we've shown that in previous years, where maybe the last few games before the tournament haven't been the best, but we've been there showing what we're ready to do. It's important we stay calm, we have each other's backs, stick together in these moments, because it's obviously not easy. But like I said, perspective, that's one for me."

With competition for places set to intensify under Tuchel, the message from Guehi places unity and composure at the centre of England’s World Cup push, even as recent results and attacking issues highlight areas that still need work before facing Croatia.
