England U21 Coach Lee Carsley Challenges Team To Build Legacy With Euros Win Against Germany
Lee Carsley has urged England to establish a legacy by securing consecutive European Under-21 Championship titles. The Young Lions, who triumphed over Spain 1-0 in 2023, are set to face Germany in the final on Saturday in Bratislava. Achieving back-to-back victories would make England the first team since Spain's 2011 and 2013 wins to do so, echoing their own success from the 1980s.
England's previous encounter with Germany in the group stage saw Antonio Di Salvo's revamped squad secure a 2-1 victory. They capitalised on both shots on target, while goalkeeper Tjark Ernst made four crucial saves, thwarting England's second-half comeback attempts. Despite this setback, England remains optimistic about their chances.

The Opta supercomputer gives England a slight edge, predicting they have a 37.4% chance of winning based on pre-match simulations. Germany follows closely with a 35.3% probability. Notably absent from their earlier match was Nico Woltemade, Germany's top scorer with six goals in the tournament, two more than Harvey Elliott.
Carsley reflected on past successes under Dave Sexton, who led England to victories in 1982 and 1984 after starting strong in '78. "That's us getting off to a great start," Carsley remarked. He emphasised the importance of sustained dominance, noting that countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands have achieved this.
Discussing Woltemade and other German players, Carsley acknowledged their strengths: "We come up against all kinds of players with different attributes." He highlighted the Premier League's unique challenges and expressed confidence in his defenders' ability to handle physical play.
"I think he's a player that we're well aware of," Carsley said about Woltemade. He also praised Germany's unbeaten run and strong team dynamics. Despite these challenges, Carsley is eager for the match-up and confident in his team's capabilities.
Carsley expressed his unwavering belief in his players' potential for success. "I've got a lot of confidence with the players," he stated. His focus remains on supporting English talent and ensuring they thrive on this platform without personal reflection.
The upcoming match against Germany presents an opportunity for England to cement their place in history once again. With determination and skillful play, they aim to replicate past achievements and inspire future generations of English footballers.
