England Must Manage The Occasion Against Mexico, Rashford Says Ahead Of World Cup Last-16

England prepare for a demanding World Cup last-16 clash against co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on 5 July, with Marcus Rashford stressing that smart game management will decide whether Thomas Tuchel's team advance after Harry Kane's rescue act against DR Congo.

The tie brings extra tactical and physical challenges, as England must adapt to playing around 2,200m above sea level in front of a partisan crowd, while also facing a Mexico side with a flawless World Cup record at the Azteca and strong defensive numbers in this tournament.

England must manage occasion against Mexico

Mexico have never been beaten in a World Cup match at the Estadio Azteca, recording eight wins and two draws, and are on a run of six straight World Cup victories at the stadium; the meeting with England will be their 11th World Cup game at the venue, a competition record for matches at one ground.

Mexico can also match a rare defensive landmark, as El Tri could become only the second nation to keep clean sheets in their first five fixtures at a single World Cup, a feat achieved previously by Italy in 1990, when Italy hosted the tournament and eventually finished in third place.

England's route to the last 16 has been uneven; the Three Lions started with a 4-2 victory against Croatia in Group L, then laboured in a goalless draw with Ghana and a modest 2-0 success over Panama, before requiring a comeback inspired by Harry Kane's brace to avoid a shock defeat against DR Congo.

Rashford expects a demanding contest in Mexico City and highlighted the need for composure in key moments under pressure, particularly against opponents who start games quickly and have shown strong identity in possession and without the ball throughout this World Cup.

"It's going to be tough, Rashford said. There are no easy games in the World Cup. Different teams bring different problems for us. The altitude obviously is a factor, but it's not something that we're worried about or anything like that. We're all experienced players. We have to manage the game."

"So far, they've shown they're difficult to score against, Rashford added. They've been scoring goals, especially early on. It's a team that is set in their ways, in terms of their playing style. They're effective. There are lots of great teams in the tournament. If we want to get to the final and win it, we're going to have to come up against them and find a way to do it."

England vs Mexico World Cup probabilities and Rashford future

Pre-match projections suggest a tight meeting between the sides, with England viewed as slight favourites to progress from the tie in Mexico City, though the probability models also leave significant scope for extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out if neither team can win within 90 minutes.

Analysts give England a 40.5% chance of victory in normal time, compared with a 31.5% likelihood for Mexico; 28% of simulations end level after 90 minutes, leading to extra minutes and maybe penalties, while England hold a 54.6% overall chance of reaching the quarter-finals, ahead of Mexico's 45.4%.

Away from international duty, Rashford's club situation draws attention, as reports indicate Barcelona are unlikely to trigger a permanent transfer after the 30m (£35m) option in the forward's loan deal from Manchester United expired, though Rashford remains clear that such decisions will wait.

"I live in the moment. I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup, Rashford said. I wanted it done before, but if it's not, then I won't be dealing with it until after because I want to be fully present in this moment and at the same time, we're fighting to do something so special."

With England's campaign reaching the knockout phase, the focus inside the camp stays on dealing with Mexico's strong record at the Estadio Azteca, the challenge of the altitude and El Tri's organised defence, while Rashford and team-mates aim to manage the occasion and extend their World Cup run.
