England Names Williamson Mead Parkinson In World Cup Qualifiers Squad
Leah Williamson and Beth Mead are both named in England’s latest World Cup qualifying squad, while 17-year-old Erica Meg Parkinson receives a first senior call-up. Head coach Sarina Wiegman selects 25 players for April’s fixtures, despite several injury issues, as England prepare to face Spain and Iceland in key group matches.
England host Spain on 14 April before travelling to Iceland four days later, continuing their FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification campaign. England lead their group on goal difference, just ahead of Spain after two opening wins, so the April window already carries weight in the race for top spot.

Parkinson is the only uncapped player in Wiegman’s group, selected after scoring four goals in 18 appearances for Portuguese club Valadares Gaia in all competitions. Parkinson progressed through England’s youth pathway, reaching the Under-17s European Championship final and the Under-17s World Cup semi-finals before receiving an Under-23 call-up in December.
"She's a dynamic, attacking midfielder; she wants to go forward. She's also very aggressive and pretty technical," Wiegman said of Parkinson. "She was surprised. Well, first of all, she was speechless. But she was very happy, and surprised, and excited. I just hope she adapts quickly, and I hope that with everyone who comes in for the first time. It's normal you are a bit anxious, but just go out there and enjoy yourself as much as possible and try to adapt to the level as quickly as possible too."
Mead was absent from England’s February squad because of injury but returns after recovering in time for April. Williamson has missed Arsenal’s last three games with a hamstring problem yet is included, with England hopeful Williamson can regain fitness before the Spain match on 14 April.
Three attacking options are unavailable for this international window. Aggie Beever-Jones, Grace Clinton and Ella Toone all miss the April qualifiers because of injuries. Their absence increases the importance of returning players such as Mead, as well as the contribution of less experienced squad members.
The full England list features a blend of home-based and overseas players, representing clubs in England, the United States, Portugal and Germany. Goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards are spread across leading teams, underlining the competition for starting places during this qualifying phase.
