Chelsea Coach Maresca Seeks Rule Change For Academy Player Retention

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca calls for Premier League financial rule changes to encourage clubs to retain their academy players instead of selling them for profit. He highlights the negative impact of current rules on the tradition of 'one club man' and stresses it's an issue affecting all Premier League clubs.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has expressed his hope that the Premier League will reconsider its financial regulations to prevent clubs from being incentivised to sell their academy players. He highlighted that when clubs sell academy players, the entire transfer fee is recorded as pure profit, which can be advantageous for those struggling with the league's profit and sustainability rules.

The Blues have previously sold notable academy graduates like Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Manchester United and AC Milan, respectively. During the current transfer window, Chelsea also parted ways with Lewis Hall and Omari Hutchinson for a reported combined total of £46 million. Maresca believes these rules undermine the romantic aspect of football, where fans desire to see homegrown talents spend their entire careers at one club.

Maresca: Keep Academy Stars

Maresca emphasised that this issue affects all Premier League clubs, not just Chelsea. "It's not only us; it's all the Premier League clubs," he stated. He reminisced about Italian football, mentioning Francesco Totti's 20-year career at Roma as an example of a one-club man cherished by fans. "We love that in football; the fans want to see that," he added.

Despite these sentiments, the sale of academy players has enabled Chelsea to spend a staggering £1 billion in the last four transfer windows. Maresca acknowledged that these financial rules have benefitted all major Premier League clubs. "It's not only Chelsea spending money on players; it's all the big clubs trying to buy players," he said.

Maresca was asked whether he believes the rules should be changed to protect academy players. He responded affirmatively, suggesting that if the aim is to safeguard young talents, then adjustments are necessary. "If they want to protect academy players, then probably yes," he concluded.

He reiterated his stance on how these regulations impact the essence of football: "My personal opinion is it's a shame because we like to see a one-club man but the rules are different." This sentiment reflects a broader concern about maintaining the traditional values of football amidst evolving financial landscapes.

In summary, Maresca's comments highlight a significant issue within modern football—balancing financial sustainability with preserving the sport's romantic elements. His call for rule changes aims to ensure that academy players can remain integral parts of their clubs throughout their careers.
