West Ham United went ahead in less than a minute as Nolan's left-footed shot flew past Mark Schwarzer. The Hammers got a two-goal advantage when Matt Taylor's corner was headed in from close-range by defender Winston Reid. Winger Taylor smashed from the edge of the box after a poor clearance by the Cottagers to make it three before half-time.
The Hammers looked more threatening on the wings trying to supply crosses towards their main man Carroll. However, Martin Jol's men were punished for poor defending and failing to close down quick enough.
Hammers new signing Andy Carroll made his debut while Kieran Richardson started for the Cottagers. Midfielder Yossi Benayoun, on loan from Chelsea, was unveiled before the match at Upton Park.
