EPL: How Tottenham beat Manchester United 3-2

Manchester, Sep 30: Tottenham Hotspur ended their 23-year winless streak at Old Trafford on Saturday after beating Manchester United 3-2 at The Theatre of Dreams.

United put up a late fight but Spurs held back to deny every attack till the end. Veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel made incredible saves towards the end to deny Paul Scholes and Patrice Evra while Wayne Rooney hit the post, Michael Carrick hit the bar.

Many would question Sir Alex Ferguson's team line-up especially for not including striker Rooney who made such an impact after coming on in the second half that United scored two in three minutes. Spurs' American striker Clint Dempsey also scored a goal in between United's fight back to hurt Red Devils fans further more.

Two minutes had not gone and Spurs' defender Jan Vertoghen cruised through the middle of the park to slot home the first goal. 30 minutes later speedy Welshman Gareth Bale raced through United's defence to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.

Spurs were clearly the more dominant side in the first half, pushing forward with pace and testing United's fragile defence. United's veterans were left breathless especially defender Rio Ferdinand, who couldn't keep up with Bale's pace for their secong and third goal.

Dempsey scored his first goal since joining Spurs on Deadline-day of the transfer window, which turned into the winning goal. Prior to that United thought they narrowed their opponents lead but Spurs were lucky enough for Dempsey's goal as Kagawa slotted past Friedel just after 2 minutes.

United, no doubt, were the better team in the second half, pushing everyone forward while Scholes was pulling the strings in the middle. Spurs failed to even get the ball past the half-line as United tried and tried but did not succeed.

Credit to Spurs defence and Bale's tireless runs which helped them beat United at Old Trafford after 23 years.
