EPL: Manchester United brush aside Chelsea

By Biswajeet Panda
Manchester, May 9: Manchester United got past a resurgent Chelsea to almost finalise their English Premier League 2011 title as their own. United are now on the verge of securing a record 19th EPL title.

Once again, Ryan Giggs was the major architect of Manchester United's victory and it is the 12th time he being in the Champion team along with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United settled into the business almost as soon as the match started when Javier Hernandez crossed up a magnificent Park Ji-Sung pass in the 37th second. They added the second goal to their tally in the 23rd minute when Ryan Giggs produced a perfect cross which skipper Nemanja Vidic successfully headed into the goal-post.

For most part of the game, Chelsea appeared clueless to the aggressive game-plan of Manchester United and were looking set for a drubbing when Frank Lampard revived hopes of a recovery in the 69th minute with a vintage goal. But that was it as United tightened all screws and ended the match with almost the EPL trophy in the bag.

United now need just a point from their last two matches against struggling sides Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool to formally collect the Premier League title.

In a post-match interaction with Sky Sports, an ecstatic Ryan Giggs said, "It's a massive step forward for us. Mathematically we have not won the title but we are nearly there...We know we are capable of playing good football and we knew we had to keep attacking as one goal is not enough against a team like Chelsea. It was a great start and it would have been easy for us to take our foot off the pedal but we didn't."

He added, "We will try and get it done as soon as possible at Blackburn next week. It's a tough place to go but I am sure we will have a lot of fans there, there will be a great atmosphere and we won't go for the draw but we will try and win."

It was United's 17th win in 18 home matches this season.
