Top 5 signings in the transfer window
London, Feb 3: Premier League clubs spent nearly £125million during the transfer window in January. Some clubs buy to survive in the league and some to simply strengthen their squad. But its not always about the money spent, its about the talent they signed. Here is a look at the top 5 signings in the January transfer window.

Lewis Holtby - Tottenham Hotspur - £1.5 million

Holtby has been impressive in the Bundesliga with Schalke scoring four goals and seven assists this season. Spurs have been in contact with Holtby over a pre-contract to sign him for free during the summer. However, a season-ending injury to Sandro meant that Andre Villas-Boas was short of midfielders and the Portuguese coach moved in for the Germany youngster for £1.5 million. Holtby captained the Germany U-21 side and already has three caps for Germany. The 22-year old can either play on the left flank or in the middle.

Moussa Sissoko - Newcastle United - £2 million

The French central midfielder has already made a mark in the Premier League, scoring twice against Chelsea in the 3-2 win on Saturday. The defensive midfielder was brought in for the injured Chieck Tiote for just £2million from Toulouse. Sissoko also played a vital role in the win against Aston Villa and being compared to Yaya Toure due to his strength, good pace and strong defensively.

Nacho Monreal - Arsenal - £8.5 million

Arsenal haven't been active during the January transfer window but Arsene Wenger had to move in for Monreal, 26, for £8.5million from Malaga. The Spain international was brought in to replace Kieran Gibbs, who is out for nearly two months due to injury, and will play ahead of Andre Santos at left back. Monreal will boost Arsenal's attack on the left-hand side and also strengthen the defence. The Spaniard is quick and able to create chances with crosses and final balls.

Demba Ba - Chelsea - £7.5 million

Demba Ba was on the wishlist of many Premier League clubs but Chelsea activated his £7.5 million release clause and offered him around £90,000-a-week to come to Stamford Bridge. BA, 27, has already made five appearances for the Blues scoring three goals. The Senegal international is in top form and has been playing ahead of Fernando Torres. Ba already has 14 goals to his name this season, 13 of which was scored when he was at Newcastle.

Daniel Sturridge - Liverpool - £12million

Liverpool wanted a striker to lessen the burden on Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge was the perfect signing for Brendan Rodgers. Sturridge started his career at Manchester City and then moved on to Chelsea and four years on the England international got limited chances with the Blues. A loan spell at Bolton Wanderers in 2011 helped Sturridge to prove that he can play at highest level. He scored 8 goals in 12 matches for Bolton. The 23-year old striker already has three goals in four appearances for Liverpool.
