EPL: Liverpool summer signings review
Liverpool, Sept 4: The Reds owners failed to sign a striker on deadline day, leaving manager Brendan Rodgers to rely on prolific forward Luis Suarez to do the job alone upfront.

Team Profile: Liverpool

Clubs spend £490m on summer transfers

But after suffering two heavy losses and only a single point in three games, Rodgers will miss his £35m striker Andy Carroll, who joined West Ham on loan, and also failed to sign Clint Dempsey on the last day of the transfer window.

The Northern Irishman's first signing Fabio Borini hasn't looked that promising on the right flank while 17-year-old Raheem Sterling was toying around with Manchester City defender Kolo Toure in their 2-2 draw at Anfield. The young winger has impressed in every game.

However, Rodgers £15m capture of midfielder Joe Allen has been a sensation so far. The 22-year-old holding midfielder, described as 'Welsh Xavi', has a passing accuracy of more than 85 percent and has had more touches than any other Liverpool player.

Another promising and highly rated midfielder Nuri Sahin, who joined on loan from Real Madrid, got his first start against Arsenal. Not so quick and active as Allen but Rodgers has made decent signing, and with the absence of injured Lucas, Sahin can fulfill his role in midfield.

But what Liverpool really lack is firepower in the attacking half. The Red's are now being linked with Michael Owen, Didier Drogba, Emile Heskey and other free agents but the owners will not agree for 'expensive, short-term quick fixes', instead develop and move forward with youngsters.

Samed Yesil, tipped to be the next Drogba, from Bayer Leverkusen was signed for just £1 million and 24-year-old Moroccan international Oussama Assaidi joined Liverpool from Heerenveen for £3 million.

Rodgers now has two new young strikers who are yet to taste Premier League football while the other two are yet to make a difference upfront.
