Erling Haaland Hits 60 Norway Goals: The Incredible Record Leaving Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappe Behind

Erling Haaland's latest winner at the FIFA World Cup 2026 was another reminder that while Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi dominate many of football's biggest records, no active player is scoring for his country at quite the same rate as the Norway striker.

Haaland's decisive late goal against Ivory Coast fired Norway into the Round of 16 for the first time in the nation's history and took his astonishing international tally to 60 goals in just 53 appearances.

Erling Haaland

The numbers are almost unprecedented.

Erling Haaland reaches 60 goals faster than anyone

The Manchester City striker now has the same number of international goals as France superstar Kylian Mbappe despite playing 48 fewer matches.

His goals-per-game ratio also comfortably surpasses those of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the same stage of their international careers.

International goals comparison

Player Goals Matches
Erling Haaland 60 53
Kylian Mbappé 60 101
Lionel Messi 112* 196*
Cristiano Ronaldo 145* 231*

*Current career totals.

Haaland is averaging more than one goal per game for Norway, a scoring rate unmatched among today's elite international footballers.

Five World Cup goals in three matches

After waiting years for Norway to qualify for a major tournament, Haaland has wasted little time making his mark on the biggest stage.

The 25-year-old has already scored five goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including the late winner against Ivory Coast that secured Norway's place in the Round of 16.

His World Cup goals have come against Iraq, Senegal and Ivory Coast, with all five strikes being one-touch finishes that perfectly illustrate his elite movement inside the penalty area.

Quiet performance, decisive finish

Against Ivory Coast, Haaland was relatively subdued for much of the contest.

He completed just 10 passes, recorded only 27 touches and was overshadowed by teammates such as Antonio Nusa and Martin Odegaard for long periods.

But, as has become the hallmark of his career, he needed only one opportunity.

With four minutes remaining, Patrick Berg's cutback found Haaland inside the penalty area. The finish was far from clean, but it crossed the line to send Norway into the knockout stages.

It was his 60th international goal-and arguably his most important.

Erling Haaland could threaten Cristiano Ronaldo's all-time record

Haaland's scoring rate has sparked inevitable comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo's all-time men's international scoring record.

Ronaldo currently has 145 international goals in 231 appearances, averaging a goal every 1.59 matches.

Haaland's record is significantly better:

  • Erling Haaland: 60 goals in 53 matches (1.13 goals per game)
  • Cristiano Ronaldo: 145 goals in 231 matches (0.63 goals per game)

If Haaland maintains anything close to his current scoring rate while remaining fit and Norway continue qualifying for major tournaments, he could eventually challenge the all-time international scoring record years before reaching Ronaldo's current age.

Brazil next for Norway

Norway's reward for defeating Ivory Coast is a blockbuster Round of 16 clash against Brazil.

The encounter will pit Haaland against one of the tournament favourites and provide another opportunity to strengthen both his Golden Boot challenge and his extraordinary international scoring record.

With five goals already in the tournament and 60 for his country overall, Haaland is proving that while Mbappe and Messi may dominate the headlines, no striker in world football is currently finding the net for his national team with greater consistency than Norway's prolific No. 9.
