Two European giants are set to face off on Thursday evening, with both Spain and Italy looking to solidify a spot in the Euro 2024 knockout stages. Both teams have won their first group matches, so even one more point should be enough for the reigning champions and their Nations League rivals to progress.

Spain and Italy have met a total of 36 times so far at the senior level. Spain have won 14 of these games, while Italy won 10 times and the remaining 10 games ended in draws. Their first clash was back on 9th March, 1924 which was an international friendly that ended in a goalless draw.

The last time these two sides met was only a year ago in the Nations League semi-final. Spain won the match by a 2-1 margin against Italy and progressed to the final. Spain then lifted the cup winning the Nations League after beating Croatia in the final.

Spain vs Italy Preview

Facing Croatia in their opening match, no one expected that they would win by three goals. The composed performances of every player that day suggested that they could fight for the Euro 2024 trophy. Three time European champions, Spain's hopes of adding a fourth continental crown to their collection.

La Roja have now lost only one of 11 competitive games under De la Fuente, winning each of the last seven. That represents their best run since 2017. On the other hand, since losing to La Roja in the Nations League in June, the new-look Azzurri have lost only one of their next 12 games.

Italy won their opening game against Albania and with that they are now unbeaten in ten European Championship games. Though considered outsiders this summer, the Azzurri's ultimate goal is to become only the second team to win consecutive Euros, after Spain. First, they must ensure their progression to the knockout stage.
