John Eustace Disappointed After Derby County's Heavy 4-0 Defeat To QPR In First Match

In his first match as manager, John Eustace faced disappointment as Derby County lost 4-0 to QPR. Despite some positives, the team struggles in the relegation zone.

John Eustace's debut as Derby County's manager was far from ideal, ending in a 4-0 loss to Queens Park Rangers. Eustace, who recently transitioned from Blackburn Rovers, hoped for a strong start but faced disappointment as QPR scored twice in each half. Ilias Chair initiated the scoring with a powerful shot in the 21st minute after capitalising on an error.

Koki Saito extended QPR's lead with a precise finish just before halftime. Chair further widened the gap by scoring again near the hour mark, followed by Ronnie Edwards' header nine minutes later, sealing the victory. This defeat leaves Derby winless in their last nine away league games, dropping them into the relegation zone due to an inferior goal difference compared to Hull City.

Eustace Disappointed by Derby's Heavy Defeat

Eustace acknowledged some positives but admitted they were insufficient given their precarious league position. "We started really well," he told Sky Sports. "They scored a really great goal and took the wind out of their sails." He emphasised the need for hard work on the training ground, noting that confidence is lacking within the team.

Eustace expressed his desire for a positive performance but recognised it wasn't achieved. "I wanted to see a good positive performance tonight," he stated. Despite this setback, he remains focused on preparing for the relegation battle ahead. "We are in a relegation fight; everyone can see that," Eustace added.

The victory propelled QPR into 11th place, overtaking Watford and Norwich City before other weekend matches. Their recent success against newly promoted teams continued, having also defeated Oxford United in December after an 11-match winless streak against such opponents.

QPR's Tactical Adjustments and Player Impact

Despite the scoreline, QPR recorded only 0.88 expected goals (xG) from 12 shots compared to Derby's 0.56 xG. Marti Cifuentes praised his team's resilience following previous disappointments. "I am very pleased, not just with the result but with the mentality to bounce back after the disappointment we had in our last game," Cifuentes told Sky Sports.

Cifuentes noted challenges at the game's start due to Derby's unexpected back four formation but highlighted Ilias Chair's crucial role in maintaining momentum during the first half. "He can do well everywhere on the pitch as he's such a good player," Cifuentes remarked about Chair's versatility and importance to the team.

Chair's performance was particularly significant as he returns from two injuries, showcasing his potential impact on QPR's future matches. His contributions underscore his value as an integral player within Cifuentes' squad.
