Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler believes Evan Ferguson can still thrive at Brighton, even as he prepares for a loan move to Roma. The 20-year-old forward is set to join the Italian club on a season-long loan, which includes an option to buy for €40 million. Upon arriving in Rome for his medical, Ferguson received a warm welcome from fans eager to see their new player.
Ferguson's recent seasons have been marred by injuries, limiting his development and playing time. Despite these setbacks, Hurzeler remains confident in Ferguson's potential. "For us, it is always important the individual players have an environment where they can develop," Hurzeler told the Argus. He emphasized that Ferguson is still part of Brighton's future plans and expects him to return as a key player.

During his time with West Ham in the latter half of the 2024-25 season, Ferguson struggled to make an impact. He started only once under Graham Potter and failed to score any goals. This followed a challenging start with Brighton, where he scored just once in 13 league matches due to an ankle injury and competition from teammates Joao Pedro, Danny Welbeck, and Georginio Rutter.
Ferguson's early years at Brighton showed promise as he netted six goals in each of his first two seasons and provided two assists in 2022-23. Notably, he became the youngest player to score at least 15 goals across all competitions for Premier League clubs over the past three seasons (from 2022-23), achieving a total of 17 goals during this period.
Roma hopes Ferguson's stint will be more fruitful than his previous loan spell. Hurzeler believes that with more game time, Ferguson will regain form and contribute significantly upon returning to Brighton. The club sees this loan as beneficial for his growth and future contributions.
The decision to loan Ferguson was made with his development in mind. Hurzeler stated that providing players with opportunities to grow is crucial. He remains optimistic about Ferguson's return as an influential figure for Brighton after gaining experience abroad.
