Everton Achieves First Victory Of The Season With Dwight McNeil's Brace Against Crystal Palace

Sean Dyche's Everton finally secured their first win of the season, defeating Crystal Palace 2-1 thanks to Dwight McNeil's two goals. The victory alleviates pressure on Dyche and his players amid takeover talks.

Sean Dyche expressed relief after Everton secured their first win of the season at Goodison Park. Dwight McNeil's two goals helped overturn an early setback when Marc Guehi scored for Crystal Palace. This victory marked Everton's first successful lead retention this season, having previously dropped points from winning positions in three consecutive Premier League matches.

Despite not keeping a clean sheet yet, Everton's defence showed improvement with Jarrad Branthwaite returning from injury. The visitors managed only 0.85 expected goals (xG) from 17 shots, indicating a stronger defensive performance. Dyche acknowledged the nervousness that comes with seeking a first win and emphasised the importance of every player's contribution.

Everton Claims First Win of the Season

"It was a bit of nervousness. When you haven't got that first win you feel nervous. Then you go 1-0 down, the stadium becomes awkward for the players," Dyche explained. He encouraged his team to make a difference in the second half, highlighting McNeil's impact with his long-range effort just after halftime.

Crystal Palace dominated possession with 59.4%, but manager Oliver Glasner was disappointed with the outcome. "Over 70-75 minutes we controlled the game, but you must be focused all game," he stated. Despite changing tactics and introducing offensive players, they struggled to find space against Everton's compact defence.

Glasner noted Everton's strength in set-pieces as a key factor in their success, despite Palace's efforts to adapt during the match. "They defended with 10 players around their box so we didn't have a lot of space so it was difficult," Glasner added.

McNeil's Impact and Dyche's Satisfaction

Dyche praised McNeil for his two goals and the team's overall energy in the second half. "I thought the feel of the second half was better, not just the quality," he said. McNeil's contributions were crucial as Everton finished with 0.91 xG from eight shots, showcasing their clinical finishing.

The win provided much-needed relief for Dyche amid takeover talks involving The Friedkin Group, owners of Roma. It also marked only Everton’s sixth league win in 2024, bringing some optimism to their campaign.

The defeat extended Crystal Palace’s winless streak to six Premier League games, prompting Glasner to reflect on their recent form: "Maybe it is a welcome back to reality." He acknowledged that maintaining focus throughout matches remains crucial in such a competitive league.
