Everton Faces Challenges In Player Recruitment, David Moyes Reveals Difficulties

David Moyes has expressed concerns over Everton's difficulties in recruiting quality players as the club prepares for the new season. With only three signings made so far, he highlights the challenge of competing with clubs involved in European competitions.

Everton's manager, David Moyes, has expressed his frustration over the club's recent struggles in the transfer market. Despite finishing 13th in the Premier League last season and ending on a high note with three consecutive wins, Everton has faced challenges in attracting new talent. Their preparations for their debut season at Hill Dickinson Stadium have been less than ideal.

The Toffees have only managed to secure three new players so far. Thierno Barry and Mark Travers have joined the squad, while Carlos Alcaraz's loan from Flamengo was made permanent. Moyes admitted he had hoped for more signings by this point but acknowledged the difficulty of competing with clubs that have qualified for European competitions.

Moyes Discusses Everton's Recruitment Struggles

Nine Premier League teams secured European spots for the 2025-26 season. Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur won the FA Cup and Europa League, respectively, despite finishing outside the top seven. This has made it challenging for Everton to attract top-tier talent.

Moyes shared his thoughts with The Athletic: "We're a long way away just now. I would have hoped it would have been much further down the line than we are." He added that he hopes to have closer to ten new players by the end of the transfer window, highlighting the significant work still needed.

The manager noted that being involved in European competition makes it easier to attract players. "It's a bit easier when you're a club in Europe," he said. "You get a better chance of attracting a lot of players." Unfortunately, many potential signings have declined Everton's offers.

Targeting Young Talent

Moyes emphasised that Everton is not pursuing subpar players. Instead, they are focusing on younger talents or those from lower leagues who show potential. However, attracting players with European experience or those playing at higher levels remains challenging.

He stressed that prospective players need to embrace Everton's culture and work ethic. "They have to come and buy in a wee bit to what Everton have got," Moyes stated. The club aims to build on its strong foundation by adding more quality to its roster.

As Everton continues its search for new talent, Moyes remains hopeful that they can strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes. The club is working diligently to bring in players who align with their values and ambitions for the upcoming season.
