Paris Saint-Germain have endured yet another disappointing season in Europe as they have been knocked out of the Champions League from the Round of 16 at the hands of Bayern Munich.
PSG's primary target since their takeover by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) has been the Champions League title but the trophy continues to elude Parisian giants. Now, they face a rather difficult summer transfer window and have several big decisions to make.
Both Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos are out of contract at the Parc des Princes in the summer. Despite the fact that the two greats are at the dusk of their respective careers, there is no denying the fact that they still remain top-class footballers. However, PSG still have a major decision to make whether to renew the deals of the two players or to rebuild their squad by letting them go. They would certainly be wise to keep the duo for at least another year for three crucial reasons.
Leadership and mentality
Both Ramos and Messi have been serial winners throughout their entire career and are exceptional leaders as well. Ramos previously donner the armband for Real Madrid leading Los Blancos to every single trophy while Messi has captained both Barcelona and Argentina for many years and led La Albiceleste to the World Cup last year. Needless to say that PSG could regret letting such proven winners and leaders depart.
Messi and Ramos have plenty of winning experience
While PSG have been a letdown in Europe despite their lavish spending over the years, Ramos and Messi bring a lot to the side with their huge experience at the highest level. Ramos and Messi are both among the most decorated players in the modern era. Messi is in fact the second most decorated player of all time behind Dani Alves with 42 trophies while Ramos has also won 27 trophies for club and country in total. With their eyes on the Champions League, letting such seasoned winners go does not seem like a good idea.
Monetary loss
Messi and Ramos are hugely popular among the fans and sell a lot of shirts. Losing both would be a major blow to PSG's income from merchandise. Also, letting both depart on a free transfer would be a big blow to the French champions. They are both on high wages and offloading their wages will however be a financial aid to the club but Messi and Ramos staying also helps the club in many ways.
