Gundogan Asserts FA Cup Victory Cannot Offset Manchester City's Disappointing Season

Ilkay Gundogan emphasises that winning the FA Cup will not compensate for Manchester City's lacklustre season. He acknowledges their challenges in the Premier League and stresses the importance of qualifying for next year's Champions League.

Ilkay Gundogan believes that even winning the FA Cup won't compensate for Manchester City's disappointing season. Despite a 2-1 win over Aston Villa, City sits third in the Premier League, trailing Liverpool by 18 points with an extra game played. They face Nottingham Forest at Wembley on Sunday, aiming for their third straight FA Cup final appearance.

City's title defence faltered during November and December, with only one win in 13 matches. Nottingham Forest defeated them 1-0 in March, highlighting the competitive nature of the league. Gundogan acknowledges that every game is challenging due to the high standard of play in the Premier League.

Gundogan: FA Cup Win Not Enough for City

The FA Cup represents City's last opportunity for domestic silverware this season after being eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid in the round of 32. Gundogan remains realistic about their performance, stating, "The past has shown that it's not the standard we set for ourselves."

Gundogan emphasises two main objectives: qualifying for next year's Champions League and reaching the FA Cup final. He notes that returning to Wembley for the semifinal is special but acknowledges it will be tough. "It's going to be our only chance for silverware this season," he said.

Reflecting on their loss to Nottingham Forest earlier this year, Gundogan admits they were not at their best. He stresses that any lapse in performance is punished in today's demanding Premier League environment. "Maybe in the past we could have been at 70, 80 or 90% and still win games but now it's so demanding," he remarked.

The midfielder recognises Nottingham Forest's quality and potential to compete in next year's Champions League. He insists City must improve if they want to secure a place in the FA Cup final.

Despite challenges this season, Gundogan remains focused on achieving their remaining goals. The team aims to end their campaign positively by securing a spot in both the Champions League and FA Cup final.
