FA To Hold Contract Discussions With Sarina Wiegman Following England's Euro 2025 Triumph

Following England's Euro 2025 victory, the FA will discuss Sarina Wiegman's contract at an appropriate time. Wiegman has led England to significant successes and is under contract until the end of the 2027 World Cup.

Following England's Euro 2025 victory, Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham stated that discussions regarding a new contract for Sarina Wiegman will occur at a suitable time. The Lionesses secured their European Championship title by defeating Spain on penalties, marking the first time an England senior team won a major tournament abroad.

Wiegman has achieved remarkable success in the Women's Euros, winning the last three editions. She led the Netherlands to victory in 2017 and guided England to their first triumph in 2022. She joins Gero Bisanz and Tina Theune as managers who have won the trophy three times, all with Germany.

FA Plans Talks with Sarina Wiegman Soon

England became only the second nation to retain the Women's Euros title after Germany, who won consecutively from 1989 to 1991 and then six times from 1995 to 2013. Silvia Neid also contributed to Germany's victories in 2009 and 2013, making Wiegman's achievement even more notable.

Despite not leading for long during their knockout-stage games, England managed to secure the Euro 2025 title. They were ahead for just four minutes and 52 seconds across these matches, including stoppage time. This is the shortest lead time for any title-winning team in either the Women's Euros or World Cup knockout rounds.

Wiegman's current contract extends until the end of the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. Although immediate contract talks are not planned, Bullingham emphasised that the FA is keen to retain her services. "It's a bit early for that," he told BBC Sport, expressing satisfaction with her leadership.

Bullingham added, "We are delighted she is with us for the World Cup, and we will have that conversation at an appropriate time." He praised Wiegman as an exceptional manager and expressed eagerness to continue working with her.

Wiegman's Reaction to Victory

During a celebratory event at 10 Downing Street on Monday, Wiegman shared her thoughts on England's success. When asked how they emerged victorious, she told Sky News: "I don't know! It feels very surreal." She credited teamwork and quality support around her for their achievement.

"I just try to do my best every day," Wiegman said. "Trying to bring people together, and I have so much quality around me." She acknowledged it was a special moment and humorously apologised for causing fans heart attacks during tense moments.

The Lionesses' triumph underlines their resilience and determination throughout the tournament. As they celebrate this historic win, discussions about Wiegman's future with England will unfold at a later stage.
